Celebrity Greens is Committed to Environmental Efforts*

Making an impact through sustainability, innovation, recyclability, and a commitment to preserving the environment.

At Celebrity Greens, we understand the global challenges we all face today, such as climate change, water shortages, increasing urbanization, and the accumulation of plastic waste, are impacting lives everywhere. Our parent company, TenCate’s mission is to build healthier, more beautiful communities and address these very real global environmental issues. We aim for our products and materials to be reused whenever possible and we strive to contribute to a society where everyone can enjoy sports and games regardless of climate. Collectively, we work to minimize our environmental impact through sustainable production processes.

*The environmental efforts here pertain specifically to turf products manufactured by Tencate. If these environmental efforts are important to you, please specify Tencate-manufactured turf during your initial consultation with the Celebrity Greens dealer in your area.

Benefits of Synthetic Turf

Synthetic turf was developed as a solution when natural grass wasn’t feasible in some situations, and it remains an innovative alternative today. Artificial turf addresses play inequity and climate challenges like droughts and water scarcity. It provides a reliable, resource-efficient way to ensure play remains accessible.

Maintenance

Artificial grass eliminates the need for constant mowing, reducing the high emissions from mowers and other fuel-powered equipment. Additionally, it produces no grass clippings, cutting down a significant component of landfilled municipal solid waste.

Water and Soil Health

Even in times of drought, synthetic turf allows for unlimited play without relying on limited water resources. It also eliminates the need for pesticides and fertilizers, which can harm soil health and contaminate local watersheds, affecting water sources and important ecosystems.

All-Weather Play

Synthetic turf offers a consistent, playable surface regardless of weather or season, indoors or outdoors. It doesn’t require recovery time from heavy use or rain, providing safe play conditions no matter the environmental circumstances.

Sustainable Solutions

We want companies and individuals to feel confident about the turf they use. We stand by our parent company, Tencate, in ensuring our turf meets or exceeds expectations and is a responsible choice for sustainable surfaces.

While synthetic turf inherently addresses social and environmental needs, we prioritize sustainability in our research, design, and manufacturing processes to create the best turf on the market.

PFAS Facts

PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are a group of man-made chemicals used in consumer and commercial products for eight decades, including common variants like PFOS and PFOA.

As public awareness grows about the prevalence and impact of PFAS in our environment, it’s important to understand the scope of the issue:

  • Ubiquity: PFAS have been detected on every continent, including Antarctica.
  • Water Contamination: PFAS have been found in 45% of tap water sources, prompting the EPA to set PFAS standards for drinking water.
  • Chemical Variety: There are nearly 15,000 types of PFAS, many of which cannot be tested for.
  • Global Presence: Nearly every sample in a global soil study contained PFAS, indicating their presence in soil, water, and air worldwide.
  • Health Concerns: According to the EPA, current research suggests that exposure to certain PFAS may lead to adverse health outcomes.

Forever Chemicals

One of the most concerning aspects of PFAS is their longevity. Known as “forever chemicals,” PFAS break down very slowly in the environment, leading to accumulation over time. This persistence means they remain in our soil, air, water, and bodies, making them difficult to remove.

Bioaccumulation

Bioaccumulation occurs when the intake rate of a chemical exceeds the rate of excretion. Water-soluble PFAS accumulate in living organisms, including humans and fish, with no known removal technique. Avoidance is the best prevention method, but the widespread presence of PFAS in drinking water, air, and the food chain makes complete avoidance impossible.

PFAS Solutions

Addressing PFAS is crucial. While regulations have limited the use of PFOA and PFOS, new PFAS chemicals continue to be developed and used in manufacturing. TenCate has proactively chosen to avoid using PFAS in our manufacturing and production processes and encourages other manufacturers to follow suit wherever possible.

What is TenCate Doing To Reduce PFAS?

TenCate has redesigned all their turf fibers to be free of PFAS, providing a safer and better surface for athletes, players, and communities.

They have rigorously investigated the presence of PFAS in their products and manufacturing processes. By identifying the extrusion agent used to lubricate fibers during manufacturing as the source, they have switched to an alternative lubricant that ensures the turf is PFAS-free.

Additionally, they are scrutinizing the infills we use. They are actively exploring infill options and solutions that address PFAS content, including the revolutionary PIVOT product which doesn’t use infill products, dramatically reducing the presence of PFAS.

With TenCate’s new generation of turf,  our artificial grass is fast becoming free of added PFAS.
